With awards season officially over, Hollywood is paving the way for big-budget blockbuster films that are set to go head to head for the summer season. The stars poised to dominate box office ratings range from a variety of big names celebs such as Zac Efron, Jamie Foxx, Dwayne Johnson to newcomers like Tom Holland and Fionn Whitehead.
But what films are actually worth watching? From superhero features to an exciting survival film by Christopher Nolan, take a look at Explore Talent’s top picks for the most highly anticipated summer 2017 movies below.
Summer 2017 Movies: What Films Should Be on Your Radar
1. Alien Covenant, May 19
Since the release of the first few sequels, Ridley Scott‘s Alien movies were never the same. Even the revamping of the franchise through the 2012 film Prometheus did not sit that well with hardcore fans, likely due to the fact that the film visibly lacked the presence of Xenomorphs themselves. So with Alien Covenant, Scott is making a vow to return to the core of the Alien franchise. Technically speaking, it is a sequel to Prometheus, but this time, it will include an ensemble cast, so you can bet on a lot of bloody deaths. Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, and a presumably ill-fated James Franco are in the film.
2. Wonder Woman, June 2
The last two DC films may have polarized fans of the shared universe, but there are a lot of reasons to get excited for Wonder Woman. DC is poised to take one step ahead of Marvel by releasing a film centered on an iconic female character. Gal Gadot also scored major points when her version of Wonder Woman stole the show in last year’s Batman vs. Superman. In fact, some people have gone as far as declaring that she was the best thing about the whole film. So there is no doubt that the talented actress is capable of holding her own in the upcoming feature film, which is bound to be one of the best summer 2017 movies.
3. War for the Planet of the Apes, July 14
Andy Serkis reprises his role as Caesar in this upcoming sequel. He is the medically enhanced chimpanzee who happens to be the leader of the apes in the ongoing war against the humans. Fox’s reboot is unarguably the best reimagining of the franchise. To add to the hype, director Matt Reeves tapped Woody Harrelson to play the film’s primary antagonist, The Colonel.
4. Spider-Man: Homecoming, July 7
When Sony finally announced in 2015 that they would be working with Marvel to reboot Spider-Man for yet another time, the opinions were a bit divided. But when Tom Holland made his superhero debut in Captain America: Civil War, a lot of fans were more than excited to see the young Brit in his standalone movie. Starring alongside Holland are veteran actors Robert Downey Jr. and Michael Keaton, who plays the villain Vulture.
5. Dunkirk, July 21
The fact that it’s Christopher Nolan who’s directing this film should be enough reason for you to go watch it. Dunkirk is easily one of the most anticipated summer 2017 movies. Aside from the fact that Nolan has his name printed all over it, the film boasts an ensemble cast that includes Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy, and Mark Rylance. It will also mark the acting debut of One Direction member Harry Styles and stage actor Fionn Whitehead.
Dunkirk is Nolan’s first attempt to direct a war film, which is a far cry from his previous works that include The Dark Knight Trilogy and Inception. It centers around the infamous Dunkirk invasion, where British forces were surrounded on the beaches of Dunkirk during World War II.
